quietly but forcefully enough that I complied.
I fought, but only enough to stay alive. I felt my heart break every time I struck down one of the people who saved my life. The Inferiors were winning but slowly, subtly, things began to turn and he realized it too. In a matter of minutes we were surrounded. Anger contorted his face as he turned to face them. The bullets began to fly toward us and he screamed out of frustration and dropped to his knees. I tried to shut my eyes against the oncoming bullets but I couldn’t. With a start, I realized that the bullets, along with everyone, had seemed to freeze in time. Then, it registered that it had. He was one of them.
I watched as he raised his head and I saw as he had the same moment of realization that I had moments before. He beat the ground until his fists were bloody, and he screamed until his voice was gone. It would have seemed jocular if you hadn’t known the pain he was going through. He tried to stand but fell instantly. He put his head on the ground and then looked up. He stood with a deep look of poignant regret in his face and he let go of time.
