Chesterfield FC Visit Miss L Hockley On Thursday 9 June, the Chesterfield and Heritage Howlers visited Chesterfield football stadium. Students were given a tour of the ground, the tunnel and had a browse around the club shop. The students learned that before the players come out before a match the players say, “Commitment, Focus, Courage”. All of our students agreed that these are important values when taking part in any sport. Whilst walking through the tunnel the students were lucky enough to see Daniel Jones, who is currently injured so wasn’t away with the rest of the team. This was a perfect photo opportunity. Thank you to Chesterfield FC for your hospitality and to Andrea for showing us around the ground. The Brilliant Club - University of Sheffield Mrs T Oley-Jones This year for the first time, 3 of our Year 9 students took part in the ‘Be Brilliant’ project run by an organisation called The Brilliant Club. They give students the opportunity to work with a PHD tutor from a top university to study various subjects at a level which is one key stage above their current one. Our school took part with 3 other local secondary schools and after filling in an application form, the 3 students selected were Pippa Harding, Sophie Atkinson and Callie Wood. The chosen area of study was Science with the specialism being in micro-biology and investigating the beneficial effects of bacteria. The 3 students took part in an induction event at the University of Sheffield, attended several tutorials and finally wrote an extended assignment before graduating with top class awards. All the students who took part attended a graduation ceremony at Nottingham University on 21 May to collect their awards and celebrate their huge success. We are very proud of our 3 students as they all completed the course and the assignment and despite the difficulty of the work that they were doing, they all rose to the challenge admirably. Online Safety Mrs A Lindley At Heritage High School we experience numerous problems caused by students accessing social media and using this in an inappropriate way. Children and young people spend a lot of time online, it can be a good way for them to socialise, explore and have fun. But children do also face risks like cyberbullying or seeing content that is inappropriate. It is important that parent(s)/carer(s) join the school in ensuring that our children are safe online. Talking to your child openly and regularly is the best way to help keep them safe online. We will continue to provide information on future newsletters regarding online safety, but useful websites to obtain more advice include: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/online-safety http://www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-and-resources/parents-and-carers http://www.childnet.com/parents-and-carers
