The Reading Challenge Tanitia Moore - Year 10 The Six Book Reading Challenge was designed by Unison and ran in June and July in order to encourage more people to read. It involved each participant receiving a small booklet and filling it in with both fiction and non-fiction. They had to state the six books they read, write a little bit about each book, and rate it from a scale of 1-5. My booklet consisted of varying titles, ranging from John Steinbeck’s famous Of Mice And Men all the way to Cassandra Clare’s City Of Heavenly Fire, which was the last instalment of The Mortal Instruments Series. (Which is stated on Amazon.co.uk to be a whole whopping 752 pages, and honestly provided a lot of pressure to the challenge.) Participants who completed the challenge were automatically entered in a draw for a Kindle. I think that this was likely to be a major selling point, and definitely pushed me to complete my booklet. The room designated to the celebration of the completion of the challenge was beautiful. Circular tables were readily set with a white cloth and sparkling cutlery, and our reviews were displayed on a board, and, after searching, I managed to locate all six of my reviews. The entertainment included the local choir performing, which I thoroughly enjoyed. They came off as well-prepared, and I enjoyed listening to them sing. They performed a variety of brilliant songs, both new and old. What happened after was my favourite - the evening meal! There was a main course of meat and potato pie, mushy peas, gravy, and a choice of red cabbage. There was a vegetarian option of chilli. It was so good that some people went for a second serving. The dessert was served with a hot drink of your choice, and you could pick from a range of cupcakes, cake slices, and fruit cakes. After another enjoyable rendition of music by the choir, certificates and gift bags were handed out. There were two prize draws; one for adults, the other for children. Rhiannon Walton, who is a Year 10 student from Heritage, was the lucky winner of the Kindle. All in all it was a very enjoyable night, and I wouldn’t hesitate in participating again. The Heritage students invited, apart from myself, were: Redgrave: Louise Machin Katy Shoreson MacArthur: Lauren Coleman Shannon Bainbridge Marissa Mumby Westwood: Rhiannon Walton Sophie Marples Callum Ellis Heritage Remembers Mrs A Lindley On 11 November at 11am, Heritage High School paid their respects to the men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country. The remembrance celebrations were conducted by Reverend Steve Short and the Head Boy and Head Girl read a poem and laid a wreath. All staff and students gathered around the Agora at the front of the school, and we were joined by a small number from the community. As always on such occasions the behaviour of our students was exemplary. Tolkien: Shannon Palmer Corburn Jenkinson Jessica Ince Charlotte Ince George Allen
