Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Meet the Heritage Eco Crew
Mrs K Capps
At Heritage, we have an Eco Crew that tries to raise awareness of eco and
environmental issues around school. A full year ago now we started a new
project to develop an unused area of land in school into a biodiversity/wildlife
garden and a garden to grow our own fruit, vegetables and flowers. We have
already achieved so much: funded, erected and grown produce in our first
greenhouse; funded a chicken run to keep our own chickens; built a seating area;
grown a vast array of vegetables in raised beds and pallet planters; built bug
hotels and prepared a disused area of land for a wildlife habitat.
We are not slowing down! The next lot of projects involves recycling unwanted
disused items into attractive items for the garden, building a pond out of a tractor
tyre, a large pottery mosaic table top, replicating the McCain Scarecrows of the TV
and last but not least building a second greenhouse out of two litre
pop bottles. If any of this sounds like something you may be
interested in, come along and meet our group on Tuesday
lunchtimes and Thursday after school in Discovery. We are a friendly
bunch and we are open to everyone.
Here we all are with our shiny new badges, if you spot someone
wearing one, stop and ask them what we do, you may be surprised.
HELP! We need 1500 plastic 2 Litre pop bottles to build our greenhouse. Whilst you are sat over
Christmas drinking your fizzy pop, please spare us a thought – send them into school where we will
wash them and recycling them into wind chimes, bunting and a greenhouse. You can help us achieve
this and build part of a greenhouse wall.
We Love School!
Ryan Pearson, Nathan Skinner & Adam Reast - Year 8
During summer term last year, me and my friends became involved in the eco crew and started gardening at
lunchtimes. I particularly enjoyed looking after the chickens, so in September myself and my friends had health
and safety training and are now the schools chicken monitors. We arrive at school early in the morning and let
the chickens out and check they have food and water. Then we come back at lunch to check for eggs. We enjoy
the responsibility and it’s fun to get involved in school life.
In the garden we have grown lots of different vegetables, flowers, fruit,
tomatoes, cucumbers and chillies in the greenhouse. There is always
something to do, the weeding and watering is never ending.
The eco/gardening club is Tuesday lunchtime and Thursday after
school. As the weather is getting a bit too cold and wet to go outside,
we are making things for the garden out of recycled rubbish and things
to sell to raise money for seeds and plants. We have recently started
making artwork out of folding old unwanted books on Thursday
lunchtimes in Discovery breakout space, come and join in the fun. It’s
fun to make a hedgehog, Christmas tree or angel and we are very proud
of our achievements. If you interested in joining in, come along and
have a go.
