Ace Fundraiser Jake Mrs Dench, Deputy Headteacher Year 8 student Jake Parker raised £55 for Centrepoint this summer. During the celebration assembly in the last week of the summer term, Jake announced that he was going to have his hair shaved for charity. Jake wanted to raise this money for Centrepoint, who can use it to provide a bed for the night, or a warm meal for teenagers who are not as fortunate as others. Prince William is the patron of the charity, and was introduced to the work of this charity by his mother, Princess Diana, when he was growing up. It would seem that Jake has been influenced too. Jake completed his challenge over the summer holidays, and then worked very hard collecting his sponsorship. We are very proud of him, and glad that his hair has grown back in time for the change in the weather! Another term has been and gone and at this early stage in the year Tolkien students are already proving they are some of the keenest and most determined Heritage has to offer. MacArthur have taken a very early lead in the Vivo race but I have every confidence this gap will be closed in the new year. Well done to every student who has contributed by doing their best, day in and day out, this year but a special mention for the top ten Tolkien vivo earners who have tried so hard over the past two terms. I’m sure every member of Tolkien would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a fantastic new year! Mr Newton Head of Tolkien House Mrs Pellow, Learning Mentor On Saturday 23rd of November, five Heritage students took on the mammoth task that we all hate……… BAG PACKING!!!!!! If you ventured into Tesco’s between 9am and 5pm on this day you will have seen the happy smiling faces of five Year 10 students with their families and friends, chatting to you merrily whilst we offered to pack your shopping and talked to you about Namibia. NAMIBIA? Why were we chatting about Namibia? That’s in Africa somewhere isn’t it? What’s that got to do with Clowne and your pint of milk and loaf of bread? Well these students aren’t just packing bags for the fun of it (although a few of them did stay past their packing shift because they were enjoying it so much). They are trying to raise money to go to Namibia in July 2014 to help a primary school out there by building a playground. The primary school is A Gariseb Primary School which is part of the Anixab community at Sorris-Sorris. Here the children, all of primary school age, are so desperate to be educated, that they live here away from their families, all term. The commute to school is long and arduous so they board at the school and see their families rarely. But whilst at school, their free time is spent at a playground that is sparse and unsafe So Doctor Steve Lloyd, with the support of the Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group, Derbyshire County Council, British Exploration Society and Bolsover Local Strategic Partnership, has arranged to take a group of 30 young people from 5 local schools, to help build a fantastic new one. So back to Tesco’s on Saturday 23rd November………. Well I am so proud to announce that they raised a fantastic £515.35 thanks to the amazing generosity of the shoppers that day. But we still have a long way to go to raise the funds for the students. So if you see us out in the shops offering to pack your bags, in the community doing other fundraising activities, or if you come to one of the open events at school and see a stall with our group selling craft items, please come and have a chat with us and support us where you can. If you would like any further information, have any fundraising ideas or are able to offer us any support, please contact Mrs Pellow at school. Year 9 Art Mrs De Vall Deputy Head of Creative Faculty Peppermint Treats for Christmas The BSU group have been extremely busy making peppermint creams and Christmas treats, The treats have been lovingly put into hand-made boxes and expertly gift wrapped to sell for the group’s ‘Garden and Tree Project’.
