Dear Diary
We are all in the festive spirit here – looking forward to the Christmas break. Our students
and staff have worked hard this term, taking mock exams; real exams; preparing for shows;
representing the school in sport; completing controlled assessments…it has been very busy.
A new feature in our calendar has been the STAR Awards.
Every year we hold a celebration evening for the outgoing
Year 11 students, so this year, we decided to extend the
celebration to our current students. There were over 100
students awarded for excellence across the school,
including three students who received the Governors’ Prize
for Literature. The whole event was hosted by our Head
Girl and Head Boy, Laura Jacques and Steven Fessey. We
continue to celebrate achievement across the school by
awarding STAR certificates for excellence during the year. Next year, the STAR Awards
will be held at the end of the summer term – rewarding students who Strive to Exceed
Expectations.
I found four ‘striving’ students in Miss Trevis’ ICT class. As you
may know, schools are working hard to develop a curriculum for
computing, and we are well prepared for this new development in
teaching and learning. Students, Brent Beddoe, Rhiannon
Walton, Kevin Weller and Declan Small can be seen here together
with their games, that they have designed using a computing
programme called Kodu. This programme allows students to create
their own worlds, design their layout and create a game from
scratch – quite remarkable! The digital world is moving rapidly
and our students are well-placed to take advantage of these new
opportunities.
You would probably be quite surprised by the
opportunities which students can get involved in. On
our recent INSET day, six students came in to help
create a film using the Green Screen technology. The
Heads of House and other staff were filmed reading
their favourite books in all sorts of locations across the
world! The technical expertise of our students ensured
that the premiere of the film could be shown at the end
of the day – creating a film in a day! Well done Billy,
Lewis, Jamie, Seth, Hannah and Lucie! There is now a competition to read the ‘staff
selection’ with plenty of Vivos on offer. Domonic Cassidy in Year 7 has already
started the reading challenge, by reading The Hobbit.
More creativity was seen at the
production of Bugsy Malone. We are so
fortunate to have such enthusiastic and
dedicated Performance staff who provide
the opportunity for students to excel in
drama, dance, singing and acting (as
well as all the backstage essentials). It
was a very sophisticated performance,
ably supported by our own band, who
provided the perfect accompaniment to our show.
Well, we are going to hang up our dancing shoes for a little while
and enjoy our Christmas break, so that we can be ready for a great
New Year of achievement and success.
Happy Christmas!
