32 • extreme pain (as in the case of a strangulated hemorrhoid) E x t e r n a l H e m o r r h o i d s As its name suggests, an external hemorrhoid is found outside of the anal canal. It appears much like a hard lump that seems to pop out of the anus. This is due to the clotting of blood within the inflamed veins. The symptoms of an external hemorrhoid include: • severe pain in and around the anus • extreme itching • rectal swelling • the appearance of a purple or bluish lump protruding from the anus • a burning sensation • bleeding D i a g n o s i s a n d P r o g n o s i s Although extremely common, hemorrhoids should never be taken lightly.
