• extreme discomfort when defecating
• protrusion of soft tissue from the anus
As we already mentioned, there are two basic types of hemorrhoids: internal and
external. Let’s take a closer look at each (figuratively, that is):
I n t e r n a l H e m o r r h o i d s
Most of the time internal hemorrhoids are not painful at all. Some people do not
even know they have them until they notice blood in their stools and go to the
doctor to investigate its cause.
Caused by the swelling of the small veins inside of the anus, internal
hemorrhoids usually stay inside the rectal cavity, but may protrude if they get
large enough. This can be very painful. Once they protrude from the anus, the
muscles there may tighten, actually strangling it, which is excruciating. Since
blood flow can be inhibited, prompt medical treatment is necessary to avoid
further physical damage.
The symptoms of an internal hemorrhoid are:
• bright red streaks of blood in your stools
• extreme itching
• a mucus-like discharge from the rectum
• bulging tissues from the anus
