Garlic which is called as Allium
sativum scientifically is closely
related to onions, leeks, shallot and
chives. This herb is a common
ingredient used in culinary all over
the world. There is a medical value
for this herb too.

Firstly it has a great value for
prevention of cardiovascular
diseases. It reduces the cholesterol
accumulation in the vascular walls;
prevent plaque formation in
hypercholesterolemic patients,
inhibit vascular calcification as well
as it reduces platelet aggregation and
hyperlipidemia. It is a very good
vasodilator and this effect of garlic is
resulted by catabolism of polysulfides
to hydrogen sulfides.
Garlic prevents common colds, cough
and hoarseness. Therefore it is used a
lot in the autumn and spring. .
Moreover this herb is used to reduce
blood sugar levels in diabetic
patients. . In Ayurveda the
therapeutic doses of intake of garlic
prescribed to patients with diabetes
mellitus. But for a patient who takes
insulin treatment, garlic should not
be taken in therapeutic doses without
the consultation of the physician.
