Serving Industry for almost 5 decades now, Heavy Metal & Tubes( India) Pvt. Ltd.( HMT) has manufactured seamless carbon, alloy and stainless steel tubes and pipes for demanding industrial applications. The company continues to expand its capabilities through investment in technology, quality and people while catering to heat exchanger and boiler manufacturers in India and international markets. We spoke with
Mr. Sandeep Kumar Mathur, General Manager
– Marketing, about HMT’ s development and its position in the global tubing market.

Building on more than four decades of experience Heavy Metal & Tubes traces its roots to 1978, when the company began manufacturing commercialgrade cold-drawn seamless carbon steel tubes in Mumbai. At the time, HMT was among the early Indian manufacturers to establish expertise in cold-drawn carbon and alloy steel tubing. A second manufacturing facility followed in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, in 1982. As India’ s industrial landscape developed, so did the company. HMT increasingly directed its capabilities towards sectors where material reliability and manufacturing consistency are particularly important, including refineries, petrochemical and chemical facilities, fertilizer plants and power generation. Another important phase began in the early 1990s. New manufacturing facilities were established at Chhatral, Gujarat, expanding production across seamless carbon and alloy steel tubes as well as stainless steel seamless and welded products. The timing coincided with the liberalisation of the Indian economy and the resulting expansion of industrial demand. That evolution has continued ever since. HMT today operates three manufacturing plants in Gujarat and has developed a broad production portfolio within a single organisation. One
of its defining characteristics is the degree of manufacturing integration: HMT can work from raw material in round or billet form through to the finished tubular product, giving the manufacturer greater control over different stages of production. Its portfolio covers stainless, carbon and alloy steel tubular products across numerous dimensions, wall thicknesses, grades and lengths.“ No one else in India is doing what we do,” says Mr. Mathur.“ That’ s why we describe ourselves as a perfect blend of quality and integrity.”
Manufacturing capability that continues to evolve Continuous investment has played an important role in expanding what HMT can manufacture. Over recent years, the company has introduced additional machinery for seamless carbon, alloy and stainless steel tube production, strengthening both capacity and its product range. The stainless steel division has seen significant expansion of its pilgering capabilities alongside investment in piercing technology. HMT has also added heavy-duty draw bench capacity for seamless carbon and alloy steel tubes with heavy wall thicknesses. Recently added new production line for Shot Peening for Stainless Steel Tubes to enhance mechanical properties of final product. These investments support applications where dimensional accuracy, surface condition, wall thickness and material performance are particularly important.
