Chemours
launches low-GWP refrigerants for chiller applications
Johnson Controls introduces absorption chiller reference design guide
Johnson Controls( JCI), a global leader in thermal management, missioncritical building systems, energy efficiency and decarbonization, today launched its Absorption Chiller Reference Design Guide. The blueprint helps data center operators convert the 57 % of energy typically lost as waste heat from on-site power generation into productive cooling, reducing cooling-related electric demand and allocating more power available for AI workloads. In a 1GWscale AI Factory, those efficiency gains can support up to 97MW of additional AI computing capacity without increasing on-site power generation, creating the potential for up to USD 18bn in additional revenue over the life of the facility, based on a typical U. S. AI Factory model. The reference design demonstrates how operators can convert cooling efficiency gains into additional AI computing capacity or reduce cooling
system CO 2 emissions by up to 43 %. It can achieve a PUE as low as 1.23 with zero on-site water use. The repeatable, modular architecture scales from 100MW campuses to gigawatt-scale AI Factories without redesign, helping bring new capacity online faster. Built on more than 65 years of YORK absorption innovation and a global installed base of thousands of units across multiple industries, Johnson Controls has deployed this technology in some of the world’ s most demanding applications, including naval vessels and advanced manufacturing facilities. With a thermal management portfolio spanning air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, liquid cooling, controls and lifecycle services, Johnson Controls helps data center operators bring capacity online faster, improve efficiency and maximize AI computing capacity from available power.
The Chemours Company( CC) has launched Opteon™ ZE( R-1234ze( E)) and Opteon™ 515B( R-515B) for stationary chiller applications, expanding its portfolio of low-global warming potential refrigerants for data centers, commercial buildings and other mission-critical environments. The new products are designed to address growing cooling requirements driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital infrastructure. As data centers handle increasingly dense computing workloads, operators face higher heat loads while requiring efficient, reliable, and scalable cooling technologies. Opteon™ ZE is a hydrofluoroolefin-based refrigerant with an ultra-low global warming potential of approximately 1 under AR5 and zero ozone depletion potential. Classified as ASHRAE A2L, it is designed for applications
including air- and water-cooled chillers, heat pumps, commercial air conditioning, and data center cooling. Opteon™ 515B is a refrigerant blend comprising approximately 91.1 % R-1234ze( E) and 8.9 % R-227ea. It has a GWP of approximately 293 under AR4, zero ozone depletion potential, and an ASHRAE A1 classification, providing a lower-GWP option for conventional chiller applications. Joseph Martinko, President of Thermal & Specialized Solutions at Chemours, said the products expand options for chiller manufacturers and operators seeking efficiency, reliability, and long-term regulatory readiness. The refrigerants are currently available in selected strategic markets, with additional availability expected to expand according to market demand. The launch strengthens Chemours’ focus on higher-value cooling applications and decarbonization.
Questor receives final funding for 1500kW heat project
Questor Technology Inc.( Questor) has received funding of USD 305,060 from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program( NRC IRAP) in support of the research and development of Questor’ s 1500 kW Organic Rankine Cycle( ORC) Heat-to- Power Generation System. This funding marks the final NRC IRAP contribution towards this project. Support for the project was previously announced in the spring of 2026 and includes advisory services and funding totaling close to USD 2.35M through the NRC IRAP Clean Technology initiative. Questor’ s 1500kW ORC converts both high- and low-temperature waste heat into dispatchable electricity that can be consumed on-site or exported to the grid. Engineered as the natural companion to the Company’ s
Q-Series Thermal Oxidizers, the integrated thermal oxidizer and ORC package delivers near-zero methane and greenhouse gas emissions alongside a quantifiable revenue stream from avoided power purchases, turning what was once a regulatory cost center into a margin-positive asset. Many industrial sites throw heat away. Engines, turbines, furnaces, and flare-gas combustors send hot exhaust up a stack, and that heat often carries more energy than the electricity the site buys. An Organic Rankine cycle turns part of it back into power. It works like a steam engine, but with a fluid that boils at a much lower temperature than water, so it can run on exhaust heat alone and burns no additional fuel. Questor’ s 1500 kW unit is designed to sit behind gas engines and turbines, industrial furnaces, and the Company’ s own thermal oxidizers, returning heat that would otherwise be vented as electricity for use on site or for sale to the grid. The same principle applies wherever heat is wasted at scale: biogas and landfill engines, cement kilns, geothermal wells, and remote oil and gas facilities that generate their own power. www. heat-exchanger-world. com Heat Exchanger World October 2026
