The integrity of tube to tube sheet( TTS) joints stands as a cornerstone in heat exchanger reliability and performance. The process begins with meticulous surface preparation, where technicians must remove all traces of deposits, dirt, and grease using specifically formulated cleaning agents. This cleaning process isn’ t merely superficial— it’ s crucial for exposing the bare metal surfaces that hold telltale signs of potential failure modes. During the inspection itself, experienced engineers utilize advanced lighting techniques, including high-intensity LED inspection lights and specialized borescopes, to access and examine areas that would otherwise remain hidden from view. The examination focuses on three critical aspects: surface integrity, weld quality, and structural alignment. Surface integrity assessment includes identifying early-stage corrosion patterns, pitting formation, and crack initiation points. Weld quality evaluation involves examining the uniformity of weld beads, looking for inconsistencies that might indicate improper fusion or thermal stress effects.
