king, including his failings and triumphs.
David’s reign lasted until about 975 B.C.
so it would have been written after that
date. The earlier parts may have been
written by Samuel although most of it
was probably compiled later by priests.
1 & 2 Kings - Also originally one book,
Kings is the story of the kings of Israel. It
begins with Solomon as David’s successor,
the split of the kingdom into Israel and
Judah, and the many kings of both lands.
The first book also includes the stories of
Elijah and Elisha. It covers a time period
from the end of David’s reign in 975 B.C.
until the fall of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. It was
probably written by several priests over
the years and compiled during the Israelites exile in Babylon after 550 B.C.
1 & 2 Chronicles - Chronicles covers
the entire period from 1 Samuel through
2 Kings. It retells many of the same stories
but tries to interpret them in a way that
future generations can learn from mistakes of the past. It was probably written
during the exile in Babylon, possibly in the
latter part as the Israelites moved toward
returning to their homeland.
Ezra and Nehemiah - Originally
these were one book, titled Ezra.The two
books tell of the three-stage return of
the exiled Israelites to their homes. This
took place over about 80 years, from 538
B.C. to 458 B.C. It was probably written
by a priest around 400 B.C.
Esther - The story of an Israelite
woman who becomes queen and convinces the king to thwart a plot to destroy the Jews. It is the only book in the
Bible that does not mention God. The
events probably take place about 480
B.C., but who wrote it and when remain
a mystery.
Job - The story of a man who becomes
the object of a contest between God and
Satan. The author and time period are unknown but some scholars believe Job may
have been written even before Genesis.
Psalms - This is essentially a hymn
book, and many of the Psalms have been
turned into modern hymns. It is a vast
collection of poems and songs, about half
of them written by David, but also containing one by Moses. They were written
over a long period of time and had been
collected in one book by about 100 B.C.
Proverbs - A book of wise sayings, it
is attributed to Solomon. He apparently
wrote many himself, although probably
not all. Solomon’s works would have
been written during his reign from 970928 B.C., although some may have been
added later.
