Walk Across Texas
Walk Across Texas! is a FREE, 8 week program designed to help Texans establish the habit of regular physical activity. Since 1996, thousands of Texans have participated in Walk Across Texas! Zapata County ISD had 4 elementary schools with over 1,100 students participate from January to March. Schools kicked off the start of the program with Zumba dancing, yoga, and different forms of physical activity through their physical education classes. Together, all 4 elementary schools walked over 126,000 miles and ended the 8 weeks with a Walk Across Texas celebration which included a dodge ball tournament; and incentives such as frisbees, water bottles, pedometers, and t-shirts.
Zapata County had 8 teams register with over 80 participants. The Walk Across Texas kickoff consisted of a fun mile run/walk along with a health expo. Agencies such as the U.S. Border Patrol, local fitness gyms, and health agencies provided free informational booths and mini physical activities to the community. After 8 weeks, Top teams included Straight Otta Shape with 2,929 miles, SWATT(Sprinters, Walkers, And Trash Talkers) with 2,269 miles, and Dashing Dives with 963 miles respectively.
