November - Volume X, Issue 11 4 Tips for a Stress-Free and Happy Holiday Season! Let’s be realistic, as festive as the holiday season is, most people aren’t living out the season like Martha Stewart. In real life there are budgets to mind and schedules to keep and it can be very stressful to balance everything. Also, whether it’s from a lack of sunlight, feelings of disappointment, or feelings of missing lost loved ones, the holidays can bring depression on for many people. Here are a couple of practical tips for keeping your stress in check and depression completely out of the picture this season. #1. Connect with people. Sounds simple enough, but in today’s tech heavy world, social media has trumped real life relationships. But, these online connections just aren’t the same as one on one time spent with a good friend or with family. Try unplugging from social media for a while, and connect with the people around you. As an added benefit, since social media only reflects what people want you to see, sometimes other people’s lives look perfect and comparisons can lead to more stress and/or depression. So, try to spend less time online and more time connecting with people who build you up and bring happiness to your life. #2. Keep your expectations grounded. The media today pushes an idealistic holiday season that is out of reach for most people financially. These high expectations for gift giving and festivities can lead to debt, stress, and disappointment. You can choose not to let outside influences affect your expectations. Set a budget and stick to it, practice daily gratitude, and don’t let yourself play comparison games. #3. Plan, plan, then plan again. Planning ahead for the holiday season is paramount in keeping yourself stress free. Planning ahead with your budget can keep you from going into debt, and planning ahead on what your willing to take on, or commit too during this season can help you to not take on too much. You can often foresee a stressful situation and avoid it when you take the time to plan for the holiday season. #4. Take care of YOU. This is the time of year when many people get too busy and stop minding healthy eating and exercise habits. By keeping in a good, healthy routine you can help stave off stress and depression. But, if you find yourself in a downward spiral, please seek professional help. Enjoy your holiday season!
