Invention of Scotch Tape
Richard G . Drew invented cellophane tape in 1930 while working for the 3M Co . in St . Paul , Minn . He was searching for a moistureproof way to seal wrappings around slabs of insulating material for a local manufacturer . When the DuPont Company developed cellophane , Drew thought of coating it with adhesive to form his moisture-proof seal . After many experiments , cellophane tape was born . It was never used by the insulation manufacturer , but it has been used by plenty of other people !
Drew had inventing masking tape in 1925 , when he found out that auto manufacturers needed an easier way to keep colors separated when painting two-toned vehicles . The first masking tape only had the adhesive along its edges rather than on the entire surface . As a result , the tape tended to fall off the car . According to one story , a frustrated auto painter called 3M " Scotch " ( or stingy ) with the adhesive , and the name stuck , first to the masking tape , and then to clear cellophane tape .
