Pilates : A Little History
Early in the 20th century , German fitness expert Joseph Pilates put his name on a physical fitness method which is a body conditioning routine that purports to help build flexibility , muscle strength , and endurance in the legs , abdominals , arms , hips , and back . It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment , breathing and developing a strong core or center , and improving coordination and balance .
Pilates ' system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced . Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises .
Joe Pilates originally developed his method as mat exercises , but since then his methods have expanded to include the use of certain tools and aids . The original six principles in his system were concentration , control , center , flow , precision , and breathing .
Concentration : Pilates demands intense focus
Control : Muscle control is key . All exercises are done with control with the muscles working to lift against gravity .
Centering : This is the starting place : the group of muscles in the center of the body -- the abdomen , lower and upper back , hips , buttocks , and inner thighs .
Flow : Efficiency of movement , the exercises are intended to flow within and into each other in order to build strength and stamina .
Precision : The focus is on doing on precise and perfect movement , rather than many halfhearted ones .
Breathing : Proper full inhalation and complete exhalation , increasing the intake of oxygen and the circulation of this oxygenated blood to every part of the body . Cleansing and invigorating .

Your father probably taught you a few things , but just in case he wasn ' t around enough , here are some words of wisdom you might have missed out on :

Buy high quality tools , so you only have to buy them once . Keep a change of clothes at the office : Never hit anyone unless they are an immediate threat .
Nothing looks more impressive than a welltailored suit . Always look a person in the eye when you talk to them . Buy a plunger before you need a plunger . Exercise makes you happy . Run , lift , play . Brush your teeth before you put on your tie .
A small amount of your paycheck should go directly into savings every month . Call mom and dad every week . Never leave a pint unfinished . Give a firm handshake . Compliment her shoes . If you aren ' t confident , fake it . It will come around . You can tell the size of a man by the size of the things that bother him . Be conscious of your body language . Never lend anything you can ' t afford to lose . Go with the decision that will make for a good story . When you walk , look straight ahead , not at your feet . Find your passion and figure out how to get paid for it . Never stop learning .
Don ' t change yourself just to make someone happy .
If you ' re the smartest person in the room , you ' re in the wrong room .
Thanks for All the Kind Words !
