Glasgow University Give Blood Society
Happy New Year from your GU Give Blood Society!
While we’ re all trying to stave off those January blues, and maybe even stick to some of the new year’ s resolutions, take a moment to consider one change you can make this year. Giving blood will not only make you feel great about yourself, but each donation could save the lives of up to three different people. How that’ s for healthy body-healthy mind?! Giving blood is also surprisingly easy to do. The Blood Donor Centre is based at 8 Nelson Mandela Place, just next to Buchanan Street subway station, and is open 6 days a week.
With all the fun and business of Christmas, blood donation can drop by around 20 % over the festive period, making now an even more important time to give blood. The majority of the donors in the UK are now in the over 40s category, but almost anyone can donate between the ages of 17-65. That’ s why SNBTS( the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service) is calling for more young, fit and healthy donors such as yourselves. It is up to us to be the next generation of blood donors!
In fact, this year we are running the first ever Give Blood GUSA Challenge! We are encouraging each society to venture, as a collective, to donate at the SNBTS centre in town. We’ re starting off 2017 with a bit of competitive spirit, as whichever sports team contributes the greatest number of blood donations will win our GUSA Give Blood Trophy! And don’ t worry if you can’ t make it down with the rest of the group, individual donations will all be added in. Keep your eyes peeled for the Facebook event where you can post pictures of your blood donations, and keep up to date with the competition.
Finally, here’ s a handy link. If you take the give blood quiz you can make sure you’ re able to donate before heading down, as there are a few limitations regarding travel and health conditions etc.:

Students are ideal candidates. You can donate up to 4 times per year and it’ ll only take an hour of your time. We know you lot at GUSA are an active bunch when it comes to your own health, and blood donation is a means of channeling all that energy towards the health and wellbeing of the whole country!
