We watch what we eat, we
exercise, we have our annual
physical. So why do so many of
us still neglect our mental health?
Or ignore the power of mind over
matter when it comes to beating
physical symptoms? If it’s possible
to experience physical symptoms as
a response to emotional stress (that
recurring twinge in the back when
certain stressors occur), why is it so
hard to believe that the mind may
also help us heal?
In this month’s issue, we look at
matters related to the mind and the
brain. First, we look at the mind –
the power of the placebo effect, ways
to boost our memory, the benefits of
meditation, and the work of NAMI
in raising awareness about mental
health. Next, we turn our attention to
the brain, offering you ways to keep
your brain healthy long into old age,
and tips about the ways certain foods
can affect your brain. We also look at
traumatic brain injuries and include
interviews with some of the staff at
Cardinal Hill Hospital. And don’t
forget ways to avoid brain injury
(hint: a helmet is a must-have).
There’s also news about Alzheimer’s
research, some great suggestions
for protein bars to stick in your
office drawer, and info about that
nutritional wonder – the eggplant.
So pull up a chair and exercise the
old gray matter, as my grandfather
would call it, with a good read.
Stay healthy!
Fiona
