The Symbols of Health By Charles Sebastian Odd, the many different symbols we as a culture have developed for ourselves regarding health. So many of our behaviors and daily activities are carried out from the unconscious mind having its way with us. A man, for instance, might be genetically programmed to find a certain type of woman with a certain color hair more attractive than other women. This can be aided by what he has consciously learned about what an ideal woman is supposed to look like, given the information provided by various inputs. The same holds true for our concepts of health and wellness. If I was to ask anyone what the picture of perfect health would be, right now, in 2014, most likely I would hear words like “skinny,” “toned,” “perfect teeth,” “muscular,” “clear-eyed,” and “lively.” These are descriptors, symbolic of what we have come to perceive as good health.
