When penicillin was discovered in 1943, the cases of syphilis were knocked down considerably. As sexual awareness became prevalent, cases diminished further. However, in the last ten years there has been a resurgence of syphilis, due largely to victims not understanding that the disease can be transmitted through oral sex, and more cases of disease being reported in general.
