So it is particularly poignant when these horrors resurface to claim more lives, many times after their secret harms have been found and cured. Of deeper interest still is how the diseases regain their hold due to many human behavioral factors, many of which could be avoided. Polio Polio is a fine example of this. Most people think of Franklin Roosevelt in a wheelchair and the many millions who died in the 50s, when polio had its claws in the world. The disease had first been described in detail in the late-1700s and became more widespread as the decades passed. After two vaccines appeared, eliminating polio, the disease was thought to be on the “no need to worry about” list. As little as ten years ago, polio began to reappear in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nigeria, among other countries, where people were advised against vaccination, citing erroneously that vaccines caused infertility and for religious reasons. Many of the Muslim factions in these countries have also claimed the vaccines to be an undercover means of the West controlling third-world countries. Rickets A few minutes of being outside, walking in the sunshine and eating some fruit combats Rickets. Rickets is a disease brought about by lack of Vitamin D and was extremely prevalent in factory-towns, where workers got little sunlight and kept poor diets. After the Vitamin D connection was found, eradicating rickets was an easy task. So it was especially startling when cases started popping up in the US and Europe in the last ten years. One would think the disease had changed shape and that was what had allowed it to wedge its way back into the human drama; yet the disease had not changed. As lifestyles have changed in modern times and become more indoor and sedentary, so rickets has reared its ugly head. A few minutes of being outside, walking in the sunshine and eating some fruit would take care of this disease, if victims would take the time.
