Now medical staff can be less myopic in only looking for EV-D68 in these cases. C105 was only recently discovered in 2010 in patients from Peru and the Republic of Congo. The girl in the study is the first reported case of the virus in the United States. C105 having a worldwide presence could be problematic because these newly detected subspecies show great genetic variation in the region normally targeted by tests. In other words, C105 is hard to find with conventional tests. C105 may be contributing to flaccid paralysis and if so it could pose diagnostic challenges in clinical laboratories. The virus can go unrecognized because it is relatively new and can be hard to detect. Some tests miss it due to the virus’s variation in genetic sequence. The researchers found either or both EV-D68 and C105 enteroviruses in the respiratory tracts of all the children with acute flaccid myelitis. Yet so far, the viruses have not been found in the children’s spinal fluid. This matters because a virus in the respiratory tract would not necessarily cause paralysis, since it is not affecting the nervous system. In order to link these enteroviruses with these cases of paralysis with certainty, the virus(es) need to be present in the spinal fluid. The study will be published in the October issue of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. These newly detected subspecies show great genetic variation in the region normally targeted by tests.
