Editor, Health&Wellness Magazine
The summer after finishing high
school, I travelled to southern
Germany, where I spent three
months working in a mountain
hut. For those three months, I
enjoyed fresh mountain air. When I
returned to England and suffered a
few sniffles, I thought I was simply
experiencing a reaction to a change
in environment. Instead, I spent the
next decade suffering from the most
miserable seasonal allergies: sneezing
so much I thought I would pass out,
unable to breathe at times. Hayfever
pills didn’t do the trick, neither did
liquid nasal sprays. Luckily, I found
one prescription that at least made
summers bearable. Then, just as
suddenly, the seasonal allergies faded
away. Now I may feel a slight itching
in my throat in the spring or fall, but
little else. But boy do I feel for those
who spend weeks in misery.
Then there are those allergies
caused by things we eat. Many have
dismissed gluten or wheat allergies
as the latest fad, but for those who
do suffer from true gluten allergies,
discovering the cause and changing
one’s diet accordingly can reap
incredible benefits, including an end
to crippling stomach pain, arthritis,
recurring infections, even fertility
issues.
This month, we look at some of
the most common allergies: how
to recognize symptoms, how to

diagnose them, and how to treat
them. Even if you haven’t considered
an allergy as being behind some
of your health issues, you might
be surprised to learn that a simple
change in diet may have wonderful
results. And if you’re a rhinitis
sufferer who has not yet discovered
the wonders of the neti pot, I cannot
recommend it highly enough.
We also have some back to school
tips - yes, it’s that time already. So
pull up a chair, mix up one of our
summer smoothie recipes, and enjoy
a good read.
