For those three months, I enjoyed fresh mountain air. When I returned to England and suffered a few sniffles, I thought I was simply experiencing a reaction to a change in environment. Instead, I spent the next decade suffering from the most miserable seasonal allergies: sneezing so much I thought I would pass out, unable to breathe at times. Hayfever pills didn’t do the trick, neither did liquid nasal sprays. Luckily, I found one prescription that at least made summers bearable. Then, just as suddenly, the seasonal allergies faded away. Now I may feel a slight itching in my throat in the spring or fall, but little else. But boy do I feel for those who spend weeks in misery. Then there are those allergies caused by things we eat. Many have dismissed gluten or wheat allergies as the latest fad, but for those who do suffer from true gluten allergies, discovering the cause and changing one’s diet accordingly can reap incredible benefits, including an end to crippling stomach pain, arthritis, recurring infections, even fertility issues.
