It is important for patients to feel that they are being cared for in their entirety as persons , and not seen as an item on the ‘ to do ’ list , or merely as a clinical condition to be dealt with . All this also involves the patient ’ s need to feeling safe and protected throughout their stay in hospital , although hospitalization on the contrary has often been described as a place that generates feelings of unsafety due to uncertainty and lack of knowledge about hospital dynamics .”
and the sense of security . Because of the complex interaction of basic nursing care , every time nurses interact with a patient , they perform a complex intervention within a complex system such as healthcare . Often this complexity remains invisible to the eyes of the nurses themselves and consequently remains invisible even for all the others , due to the lack of systematic traceability of nursing activities . The traceability of the provision of nursing interventions could allow an objective quantification of the economic resources necessary to guarantee quality care . Models that consider the complexity of patients ’ needs , such as the Fundamentals of Care Framework , could help to get assistance more effectively , also intervening on many activities which are omitted .”
The solution to missed or rationed care is not an easy one , experts admit . However , as Schubert , et al . ( 2020 ) reported in their scoping review , interventions such as increased nurse
staffing and improved nursing teamwork , can result in significant reductions in the rates of rationed or missed nursing care . They identified studies that revealed varying levels of success of process interventions such as reminders ( via technology or designated persons ) as well as interventions to change or optimize the relevant care processes . The studies showed that these process interventions contributed to significant reductions in the rates of missed nursing care .
As the researchers note , “… specific interventions can positively influence the performance of a selected nursing care activity , for example fall prevention .” However , they caution , “ There is no evidence of a global reduction of rationed and missed nursing care through these interventions .”
The Leapfrog Group ’ s Leah Binder confirms that patients have the right to voice their concerns and advocate for the care they need and deserve .
