The School of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to
evidence-based practice to underpin its programmes, and
has a developing portfolio of active researchers and
supervisors. We currently have eight academics that hold a PhD,
and eight academics working towards PhDs or professional
doctorates, who have extensive experience of undertaking
pedagogical research and scholarship with a range of external partners.
Current examples of research include developing community placements;
examining leadership in the pre-registration curricula; evaluating the impact

We have established strong international research links with the University of Newcastle,
NSW, and the University of Sydney, Australia, with collaborative research around simulation
(and in particular around clinical reasoning and decision making) and end of life care for people
with a learning disability. We have reciprocal conjoint Chairs involving Professor Tracey

Our School Research Strategy is driven by our research strengths in health research and innovation,
strengthening multidisciplinary research and enhancing knowledge transfer capability into clinical practice.
PhD students can expect to have an individually tailored supervisory team with academic colleagues
from across the University as well as (where appropriate) external clinical and/or academic
colleagues, to ensure that students receive the best possible supervision at all times. The School
has an appointed Research Lead, and our researchers link in to various Research Institutes and
Schools across the University, reflecting their particular research interests, activities and
specialist areas. A major strength of the School is its established close collaborations
and partnership working with NHS hospital and community trusts and third sector
organisations. This engenders excellent support for research grants and
fellowship applications in hospital and community settings, for example in
cardiology; pain and symptom management.
