received presentation to more than 100 people, my friend took me
aside and told me that one of the people in attendance had observed
to him that I must not be a very spiritual person because of all the
gold I was wearing.
After a good laugh, I pointed out to him that since antiquity, not
only has gold been associated with abundance and prosperity but it
also is associated with higher ideals, wisdom, understanding and
enlightenment. It inspires knowledge, spirituality and a deep
understanding of the self and the soul and is symbolic of flexibility on
our spiritual path. Also, I figured if it was good enough for the three
Wise Men to give as a gift to the Infant Jesus, then it was good
enough for me to wear.
Why is it that many good, kind, empathetic people of a spiritual
nature often seem to lack the money needed to actualize their Life
Purpose and live the life of their dreams? Outside of those few who
have an outright disdain for money and its material trappings, there
are those who experience an inner split or dualism, believing that
money is only connected with worldly things, pleasure, comfort and
desire, while spirituality is a world set apart. They are unable to
reconcile the two.
But spirituality and financial abundance are not mutually
exclusive. It all depends on what you do with your money. Is it held as
a sacred trust and responsibility, used to help others in some way or is
it selfishly hoarded? Since money is a medium of exchange, when
you are not involved in exchange with the world and are isolated, you
may not be able to attract money to yourself. You may have a large
amount of ambivalence towards money - about earning it or asking for
it. Indeed, some may even feel guilty about the acquisition of money,
especially when they see others living in lack, misery and squalor.
Realize that some people learn and grow as much by having a totally
materialistic focus as others do by living in poverty. It’s not more
spiritual to be poor, nor is it better to be rich.
