The name Rutile comes from the Latin rutilis meaning“ red” or“ glowing.” Rutile and quartz are rated at different levels of hardness on the Mohs scale, Quartz hardness is rated at 7 and Rutile rated at 6-6.5. Rutilated Quartz has a vitreous luster and is generally transparent to nearly opaque depending on the number of rutile needles found within the stone.
