Now, as we move into the new year, we carry that same current of service forward. The months ahead bring opportunities to reconnect, give back, and invest in the next generation of our profession.
On January 27, the YLD presents Coffee at the Courthouse & Judicial Shadowing Day. Please join us for coffee and conversation with judges from the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit and the Second District Court of Appeal at the George Edgecomb Courthouse— breakfast at 7:30 a. m. and lunch at noon— with judicial shadowing in between. This program offers a rare, hands-on look at the daily work of our judiciary and helps young lawyers build relationships with the bench.
In February, we turn our focus to developing the advocates of tomorrow through the Robert Simms Mock Trial Competition. This YLD-sponsored program gives local high school students a practical courtroom experience— crafting themes, examining witnesses, and thinking on their feet before volunteer judges and attorneys. We’ re seeking volunteers to serve as attorneycoaches, presiding judges, and scoring evaluators; whether you have an afternoon or a full weekend, your time makes a direct impact on a student’ s confidence and skill.
Later this spring, our Law Week outreach will continue that mission by bringing lawyers into classrooms and courthouses across Tampa. We’ re looking for classroom speakers, mock trial participants, and courthouse tour volunteers— all low-commitment opportunities to give back and inspire the next generation. Even a single morning spent connecting with students can leave a lasting impression about the importance of fairness, integrity, and the rule of law.
And there’ s more to come this spring, with new programs, partnerships, and service projects on the horizon. Each of these moments— large or small— reflects what I’ ve come to love most about our division: the way service unites us. It’ s more than a theme – it’ s a practice that gives meaning to what we do. As we enter 2026, may we continue to serve with heart, lead with integrity, and find joy in the work we do for our community and one another. n
