THE RICHNESS OF PUBLIC SERVICE

The outcome of a trial can never be guaranteed, but giving your all in preparation for trial and executing your game plan does not go unnoticed to the victims and their families. I have had countless victims thank me for the work I have done on a case and explain how much it means to them, regardless of the outcome of a case. These conversations have driven me throughout my career when asked the question of why I have enjoyed my eleven years as a prosecutor— the feeling is unmatched.
During my time prosecuting sex cases, I experienced a conversation with a victim and her family that I will never forget. For many years prior to the trial, the victim’ s stepfather was sexually molesting her. At the time of trial, the victim was a young teenager. She had a younger brother. While waiting for a verdict, I was talking with the victim, brother and their mother. It was the month of December. Throughout our conversation, the topic of Christmas arose. The younger brother stated to me that he didn’ t feel like celebrating Christmas because of what happened to his sister. Some memories in life stick with you, and this was one for me. Soon after, we were all called into the courtroom because the jury had reached a verdict. The victim’ s stepfather was found guilty and, ultimately, sentenced to thirty-three years in prison and a lifetime of probation once out of prison. The victim, her brother and mother were relieved with the outcome. The past could not be changed, but knowing I helped the victim and her family take a step forward towards recovery, and hopefully a brighter future, was a tremendous feeling.
Helping others in the community while performing my duties as a public servant is an incredible honor. Eleven years ago, I only knew one definition of the word rich. However, reflecting on my career, I now have a full and complete meaning of the word. I am rich because of the work I have done and continue to do, and no matter the outcome of the case, I know that I have helped the victims, their families, and our community.
