complete classroom activities and making sure they are participating in daily lessons. We have a great team of teachers here at HMS and we are all working together to meet the individual needs of our students. Your child’s first report card will be given out at conferences in November. Typically, Miss. Matos and I will meet with the classroom teachers and families together to discuss your child’s report card and progress that he/she is making on their goals and objectives. Home school communication is essential for the development and success of our students and we have found that meeting together demonstrates great success. Please do not hesitate to contact either of us before conferences if you have any questions or concerns about your child or the progress they are making thus far. Miss. Matos is working with Kindergarten and Second Grade and I am working with Kindergarten and First Grade. Along with the classroom teacher, we have assessed each student in reading. We will be identifying students’ strengths and weaknesses. Not only will we be working with individual students, we will also be working in various classrooms. We will be working on specific skills in reading as well as helping in Writing Workshop. It is important to read with your child on a daily basis. Set a special time for reading and it will become a positive routine in your child’s day. You can read to your child or have them read to you. Talk about the book you are reading. You are your child’s best role model! If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress in reading, please feel free to contact us. ([email protected]) ([email protected]) MATH ROOM Mrs. McCarthy: Happy Fall! I hope the start of school has been a good one for all. I have had the chance to get in to many classrooms and see lots of wonderful math centers and activities going on! This year, I will be working with students in Grades K, 1 and 2. I will see small groups, and will also be going in to the classrooms to help reinforce basic numeracy skills, as well as support the grade level curriculum. Each day your children are experiencing math in the classroom, but there are also ways you can use math at home. For example, for Grades K and 1, use a deck of cards for number recognition, or matching. You could also introduce the idea of greater than or less than as well as basic facts. For grade 2, addition skills and place value can be reinforced as well! So much to do with a deck of cards!
