// ife le l sty seni o rs Building ethical foundations Hello, I’m Trish Corbett from Ethical Foundations and have lived in the Hawkesbury District for the ma jority of my life. The owner/publisher of Hawkesbury Independent, Julie Ryan, has asked me to write a column each month that focuses on the qualities of our characters and how we can take action to build the safer, kinder community that is the vision of the ma jority. I hope I can live up to her expectations and that together we can make a change in the Hawkesbury & surrounding districts. One thing we can be sure of in life is change, constant change. Nothing stays the same, things either go up or down, improve or worsen. Unfortunately when things are on the decline it happens rapidly – like water going down a plug hole – and when things require improvement it like pushing a barrel of concrete uphill – hard. The plus side is that hard things are possible, there is power in consistency – think about people who exercise regularly – they definitely become fitter and often lose weight too. There are so many things that are hard in life but it’s worth persevering as there are so many benefits and you feel great in the long term. My question to you is how much longer are you – yes I mean you, the person reading this – willing to watch our society go down the plug hole? The media is now reporting incidents such as shootings and stabbings happening closer and closer to home. Bullying seems to be a frequent everyday occurrence and seems to be part of our ‘norm’. Bullying is prevalent in our society and is across all ages and stages of life. I am hopeful that you will join me in our vision for a safer, more caring community where we are friendly, supporting, kind, caring and respectful of each other – and see our differences as the magic that enables us to grow and develop as individuals while we are reminded of, or discover, new and interesting perspectives. You can be the change you want to see in the world, when you decide to be the change you want to see in the world. You will learn more about yourself as you examine your thoughts and actions to discover the reasons you think the things you do and the reasons you do what it is you do. You can make that change right now; it’s your future and your choice. As you notice the change in you personally you will also notice the change in your environment and those around you. Your environment improves as you decide to make choices to be the change that you want to see in the world. The more personal choices you make to be the change you want to see in the world will have an influence on your world, your environment. As you change your world changes – loving people live in a loving world and angry people live in an angry world – which world do you want to live in? You have an impact on others whether or not you realise it, so make it a positive impact. If you are not sure of what to do in any given situation then just remember to be kind, be kind, be kind.
