LOCAL LIFE
ONE OF THE HAWKESBURY’ S FINEST...
by Greg Martin
Phenomenal, gobsmacking, prodigious, extraordinary, astounding, incredible, unique, unbelievable, unparalleled. Pick an adjective – any adjective in a dictionary of synonyms – and it would still fall short of describing the remarkable musical talent of Brian Weaver.
I had the pleasure of meeting Brian and his lovely wife, Sue, at their Hobartville home, where not only did I gather the details for this story, but was absolutely blown away by his memory and musical ability.
After the interview fuelled nicely by tea and bikkies courtesy of Sue the 75-year-old master musician put on a one-man show just for me. What this bloke can achieve on both button and piano accordion( and, by all reports, drums and guitar as well) has to be heard to be believed.
Music has been Brian’ s life since he was introduced to the accordion as a sevenyear-old growing up in Riverstone. His playing is superb, but what truly amazed me was his phenomenal yes, phenomenal memory for lyrics and musical pieces.
For instance, he knows off-by-heart the music for 167 Christmas carols, including the haunting“ Coventry Carol”, which dates back to 1591. On top of that, Brian can play a zillion songs across pop, jazz and rock from his own lifetime.
