At Norwest and Ngarra Christian Colleges, we are committed to nurturing the whole person – heart, mind, and soul, all within a Christ-centred community. We believe that for students to truly flourish, they are far more than their academic, music or sporting success. They need healthy relationships, genuine connections, meaningful learning environments, and most importantly, a sense of purpose grounded in their identity in Christ.
Our team are continually reflecting on how to best support our students in today’ s rapidly changing world. Over the last few months, our executive team, teaching and support staff have all been

exploring and reimagining the use of technology across our colleges. As a result, we have introduced our screentime philosophy which is reflected through an initiative, The Balance Effect.
What is The Balance Effect? The Balance Effect is our college-wide approach to rethinking screen use in learning and daily life. Importantly, this isn’ t about banning devices or turning away from technology altogether. In fact, Norwest and Ngarra Christian Colleges remain at the forefront of innovative education and effective technology use. We continue to embrace digital tools that enhance learning and prepare students for life beyond school.

Our approach is grounded in current research, including the work of leading social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who has explored the increasing evidence around the effects of digital culture on mental health, attention, and relationships. This initiative reflects our belief that technology should serve learning and life, not dominate it. It’ s a move that prioritises presence, focus, and connection, just as we were designed to live in relationship with God and one another.
Our college approach to screen use is grounded in the following core beliefs.
- We believe that human beings are created for relationships- both with
|
God and with one another.- We believe that relationships thrive when real, in-person connections are prioritised over virtual interactions.
- We believe that deep learning happens best in an environment free from distractions.
- We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to learn and grow without the influence of addictive algorithms and constant phone use.
- We believe that technology should be a force for good- respecting children’ s privacy.
At Norwest and Ngarra, we’ re not just adapting to the future- we’ re helping shape it. We remain leaders in education and technology use, but we are choosing to lead with intention. We want our students to be digitally capable and deeply connected, to God, to one another, and to their own learning.
