The wet weather failed to wash away the determination of participants at the 2nd Annual Richmond Lions Club Sleepout, held last weekend at Richmond Oval. The community event aimed to raise funds for Hope4U and shine a spotlight on the challenges of domestic violence and homelessness.
Heavy storms, relentless rain, and bone-chilling temperatures couldn’ t dampen spirits. Richmond Lions Club member Scott Hinks said the conditions served as a stark reminder of the daily struggles many face and“ Although the weather was against us this year, it only further demonstrated the reality that members of our community – and communities right across the country face each and every day.”
The Hawkesbury Branch of the CWA helped keep participants warm by generously providing hot soup for the evening.
The event drew strong support from the local community and leaders alike. Attendees included Robyn Preston MP, Member for Hawkesbury; Natasha Maclaren- Jones, Shadow Minister for Homelessness and Domestic Violence; Deputy Mayor Sarah McMahon; and Councillors Mike
Creed and Nathan Zamprogno. Richmond Lions Club member Warren Doyle praised the generosity on display:
“ It’ s incredible how much our community supports each other. We’ ve raised $ 7,000 on a very wet night, and I thank all the sponsors, donors, and attendees who made it possible.”
Organisers confirmed that planning is already underway for next year’ s Sleepout. With hopes for clearer skies, they’ re promising a bigger and better event, including family-friendly activities for those unable to stay overnight.
