VOLUNTEERS – WE THANK YOU !

Recently , we celebrated National Volunteer Week and I wanted to take this opportunity to say ‘ Thank you ’ to our volunteers across the Hawkesbury , for their efforts all year round to help others in need .
We are truly blessed with a wonderful network of volunteers throughout our community sector , not just within Hawkesbury City Council ’ s services , but in many and varied community groups . It really is something very special when an individual chooses to give up their free time to benefit others and it must be acknowledged .
In an effort to show that acknowledgement here at Council , we recently celebrated volunteers at our Libraries , Gallery and Museum , presenting awards for 5 , 10 and 15 years of service . It was a pleasure to present many residents with certificates , to show how much we value their contribution . I also wish to give a shoutout to those at our Companion Animal Shelter , Community Nursery and Bushcare groups , and across our whole Council , for your continued dedication .
Further , after the recent challenging times that we have experienced locally , I wish to extend that thanks to our SES and RFS volunteers , as well as those in Rotary , Lions and CWA for example , local groups who help the homeless and disadvantaged , those who help to promote the Arts and culture , as well as those who put their hands up , year after year , to help in local sporting clubs , our hospital , for Veterans , at schools , those who organise community events … in fact , everyone who helps simply because they see the need and don ’ t walk past it without offering assistance .
It is also exceptionally heartwarming to see the joy radiate from people when they are actively involved in volunteering and I encourage anyone who may have some free time , to find something you are passionate about and think about giving it a go .
Our community would not function without the contribution of volunteers and simply saying ‘ thank you ’ is something that we can all do , to show our eternal gratitude for their efforts .

An RSV ( respiratory

A pre-winter surge in RSV ( respiratory syncytial virus ) infections among Australians most vulnerable to severe lung disease has experts fearing a tsunami of hospitalisations for RSV-related pneumonia and bronchiolitis .
On the first day of RSV Awareness Week ( 2-8 June ), Australia has already recorded more than 47,000 RSV notifications in children aged under five years – representing 70 per cent of all respiratory infection notifications in this age group – and more than 13,000 notifications in people aged 60 years and above this year .
“ At the start of winter , we ’ ve already recorded nearly two-thirds the total number of RSV cases reported in 2023 . This is well ahead of the normal curve ,” said Dr Lisa McHugh , infectious diseases and perinatal epidemiologist at the University of Queensland .
“ We anticipate RSV infections to climb as temperatures drop . We should also expect a surge in presentations to hospitals among those not protected against severe RSV ,” she said .
