Mental health facility opens in Hawkesbury for veterans and first responders
with Robyn Preston , MP
The saying that ‘ whilst one door closes , another door opens ’ has never been truer for Hawkesbury of late . I am referring to the situation with St John of God ( SJOG ) Hospital in Windsor vs the St John of God ( SJOG ) Richmond Hospital , based at North Richmond .
Whilst SJOG Health Care will cease to operate the Hawkesbury Hospital at Windsor on 1 July 2024 , the transformation and redevelopment of the North Richmond site has been nothing short of amazing .
Mental Health care for veterans and first responders has been taken to a whole new level with a $ 64.7 million investment in an outstanding mental health and wellness

centre . For those in need of treatment for PTSD , drug or alcohol addiction , depression and other mental health challenges , Hawkesbury now has a local resource .
There are 112 private rooms each with ensuite , a dining room and an inviting café for clients , caregivers and visitors , a wellness centre with a gym , indoor heated pool , a yoga centre and a new chapel .
The historic Belmont House continues to be a cherished , architectural feature of the site .
Through this redevelopment , St John of God Richmond Hospital has focused on developing a sanctuary that inspires confidence and trust and promotes hope and healing .

HAWKESBURY HOSPITAL UPDATE
The future of the Hawkesbury Hospital is secure , following an announcement by the NSW Government , that it will take over operation of the hospital from 1 July 2024 . Hawkesbury Hospital will become part of NSW Health ’ s Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District .
The State Government has also advised me the hospital will continue to service Hawkesbury after the new Rouse Hill Hospital opens .
After a tough battle , the staff at Hawkesbury Hospital have now been advised that their leave entitlements can be transferred from their current employer , St John of God Health Care to NSW Health on 1 July . Initially the

Government had told workers they would not have this option , and this caused enormous stress to the dedicated team at Hawkesbury Hospital .
Following a united campaign , the Government has listened to our health workers . Well done to everyone who fought hard for this outcome . Additionally , I have received assurance from the Minister for Health , that there will be no changes to the clinical and community health care services provided by Hawkesbury Hospital . The campaign to look after our hard-working health staff and maintain health care in Hawkesbury has only had positive outcomes , through people power and standing up to this NSW Labor Government .

The safety of Australians in the Hawkesbury and other natural disasterprone communities has been prioritised in the 2024 Federal Budget .
For Hawkesbury residents , there is a lot to like in the Albanese Government ’ s 2024 Budget , which brings together the spending commitments for the coming year . There ’ s something for everyone , with every taxpayer receiving a tax cut and every household and eligible small businesses receiving a cut to their electricity bill .
There is record spending in areas such as medicines , Medicare , housing , defence and veterans , more support for young people with student debt slashed , and cost

Investing in our aerial emergency response
of living support , we ’ ve also delivered a surplus – the first back-to-back surplus in nearly two decades .
But one of the most welcome commitments for our community is the Government ’ s investment in our national aerial emergency response capability in both fires and floods .
The Albanese Government understands what a difference aerial capability can make in areas like the Hawkesbury , which is why the Minister for Emergency Management Murray Watt chose to make this latest announcement at RAAF Richmond last month .
Over the next two years we ’ re investing more than $ 35 million in more planes or helicopters that can be deployed for things like firefighting , emergency rescues , food drops and evacuation during floods . This commitment will allow us to invest in more aircraft and have a broader range of vessels available , allowing a more targeted response in times of disaster . I ’ ve been proud of the support we ’ ve given the states and territories , who have the primary responsibility for disaster preparedness , response and recovery , and NSW has expanded its Richmond fleet .
For people like me , who have lost their homes in a bushfire , it feels like a gamechanger to know that we can now have aircraft up in the air quickly to get on top of fires faster . We know there is more to do to make sure communities are better prepared . We ’ re currently working to establish a National Messaging System so no matter where you are or what language you speak you will receive emergency warnings .
We ’ re continuing to update the NBN and mobile coverage to ensure that lines of communications remain open during times of disaster , and improving flood gauges through the Flood Warning Infrastructure Network , ensuring the most at-risk regions like the Hawkesbury have access to timely information .
And every RFS brigade and the SES HQ in the Hawkesbury will soon receive the funding they ’ ve requested as part of my $ 4.95 million emergency services election commitment . I ’ m proud to be part of a government that is committed to bolstering disaster response and the ability of our communities to be better equipped to face the inevitable natural disasters .
