Londonderry Pony Club ’ s 50th anniversary
Any sporting organisation that is heading into their 50th anniversary is important and it ’ s no different for this proud club who punch above their weight based out at Londonderry . Londonderry Pony Club kicked off way back in 1974 and Sharne Haskins told me they were based down near where the greyhound track was . It ’ s a bit of an understatement to say that Sharne and the members of the club are extremely excited for this anniversary .
“ I have been planning this event for two years now ,” she said .
She has a beaming smile and is super excited . There has been a big social media campaign , and the actual event will have all the glitz and glamour you could imagine .
Why wouldn ’ t you be excited when you look at all the amazing events that have been happening at and around the club over the last 49 years ?
Late last year the club hosted the International Mounted Games Exchange , which saw riders come from the UK , USA , New Zealand , Canada and all over Australia . There were 20 different races and events which tested the riders ’ horsemanship and saw them riding not only different horses for an event that they were unfamiliar with , but they also changed horses four times throughout the day .
The competition and riding skills were so exceptional that at the end of 20 events , the competition was decided by 1 point . Talk about edge of the seat stuff . I need oxygen when my football team comes within six points of losing ...
After the event the visiting star riders had the opportunity to fully embrace the Australian experience . They were here for two weeks and did a Harbour Bridge Climb and went out to the Megalong Valley to check out our beautiful country .

Vegemite straight out of the jar like we do over here ! I don ’ t eat Vegemite with a spoon ! The riders were 15-16 so they had lifelong experiences whilst in the country . Sharne told me that the horses love these events , and so would you when you see what attention they get . They have massage machines , ice suits , magnetic suits plus shockwave therapy .
Anything that an Olympian may have for treatment , the horses probably get the same . They get hay nets , brushed down and a hose down which help keep them fresh and rejuvenated .
Some of the big events for the 50th anniversary year include the first rally day , on the first Sunday in February . The usual rally days are on 1st and 3rd Sunday or every month . The annual gymkhana is on in May and brings 100 riders from all over Sydney to the club .
There is a camp in September and the annual presentation in December . There will be plenty of merchandise available for the 50th anniversary including badges .
Sharne can ’ t wait to hear all the stories and compare it to 1974 . They are hoping to get a lot of the former members back for the event and it will be a great time to embrace the history of the club and what helped get them to where they are today . Several life members who have been with the club for decades will show up .
It will be a spectacular year and really beneficial for a club that does so much in the community .

BIT OF BANTER is an unraced Written Tycoon 3YO and showed she is ready to rock ‘ n ’ roll going on powerful finishing 1030m trial win at Rosehill on Jan 25 .
RAILWAY MAN is an unraced 2YO colt out of the Maher-Eustace yard . Never knocked about at any stage when second over 1030m at Rosehill on Jan 25 .
TRAFFIC WARDEN was under a stranglehold throughout when
slashing , close-up 4 th in 900m trial at Rosehill on Jan 25 . Has a touch of class this bloke .
COOL SHALAA is trained at Coffs Harbour by Brett Dodson . Won only start in fine fashion before spelling and indicated ready to keep up the good work with east 800m trial win at Coffs on Jan 22 .
