Brayden Shute – tearing it up in his wingless sprint car

Every young kid sits in their front yard at one point or another playing with their matchbox cars in the dirt and mud , dreaming of one day either being in the Dukes of Hazzard and driving the General Lee or racing their cars at a speedway track . Well , Brayden Shute is living that dream .
Not even old enough Photo : Shute Racing . to go to the pub for a couple of frothies with his dad , Brayden Shute has taken the wingless sprint car category by storm in his first year ripping up the track . And the apple doesn ’ t fall far from the tree ; racing is in the family blood with his grandad doing the same in 1972 , and Brayden ’ s father , and sister Amy have also shown what they ’ ve got .
The 17- year-old carpenter from Londonderry had a crack in go karts
at seven and fell in love with going fast , he used the Nepean Raceway at Castlereagh . Brayden went all the way through go karts and won every age class championship . He also picked up two state championships and multiple national championships and podium finishes in the sport .
It was no surprise
that when he hit sixteen , he hit the dirt track and jumped straight into wingless sprint cars . I asked Brayden what the difference was between the wingless sprint cars and the standard sprint cars you might have seen racing back in the day at Parramatta City Raceway or Liverpool Speedway . He pointed out that the sprint cars have two wings and about 900 horsepower , whilst the wingless sprint cars are racing with V6 Holden motors . He said he wants to get in with the big boys
in the sport .
Wingless sprint cars are also a lot cheaper to get into than sprints . The initial outlay is only about $ 10k , which is affordable for motor racing . The wingless sprint cars class is really for young guys to develop their skills racing speedway and for other drivers that either don ’ t have the money required or haven ’ t quite cracked it to the sprint cars .
Brayden said his favourite drivers are Max Dumsney , James McFadden and Jock Goodger . It is off season now but for his first year in wingless sprint cars Brayden made an instant impact and got plenty of attention from the right places . In twentyfive race meetings he picked up two wins at Eastern Creek and showed a lot of talent behind the wheel despite being the young gun on the track .
His home track is Eastern Creek , but he has been enjoying the travel associated
with the sport and found himself racing at Goulburn , Dubbo , Lismore , Avalon and Brisbane . When he races at Eastern Creek there are up to forty people racing per meet which keeps the competition very strong .
Brayden is the youngest driver in the category and says that he wouldn ’ t be able to race without the support of his sponsors Hobbs Trenching and Boring , Proserv Finance , A1 Racewear , Pinnacle Signs and Graphics ( who did the wrap for his helmet ) and Anglomoil .
The best drivers he has driven against so far are Todd Hobson and Jason Bates . Some of the drivers are a bit shocked to see how quickly Brayden rose to the top - he picked up the Rising Star Award for NSW for 2023 . He is hoping to win more races this year and hopefully win the club championship as well .
Brayden is hoping to keep working his way up and get a sprint car ride with a big team and race in the big leagues in the US . The sky is the limit for this young star !
