HEALTH & WELLBEING

Bill and Nish ’ s excellent adventure

by Greg Martin
There was a chemistry between them during their very first conversation when leaving their initial lecture on day one on their road to becoming successful pharmacists .
That was back in early 2002 when two 18-year-old men of Indian descent , but as Aussie as Vegemite , Nish Singh and Bill Goradi , attended that lecture at Sydney University ’ s School of Pharmacy .
During their four years at Sydney University , the future Bachelor of Pharmacy graduates formed a firm relationship , and that rapport has been built on in the years since .
And that bond extended to both men ’ s close relations – with parents and siblings becoming one big and happy extended family .
Not only are Bill and Nish fab pharmacists – ask any of their multitude of faithful Kurrajong Compounding Pharmacy customers , they are also astute businessmen !
The two old mates split their workdays between Kurrajong and another pharmacy they operate in Bundanoon .
Pharmacy is in the blood of both the Goradi and Singh families .
Bill and Nish married fellow pharmacists , Bill ’ s Uncle George was a long-time pharmacist who was a valued mentor to both men during their studies , and when they ventured out into the workforce during and after completing their studies .
Nish ’ s wife , Hamshi , was a fellow pharmacy student of he and Bill but has since furthered her medical studies to become a General Practitioner .
Twinkle , who puts as twinkle in the eye of her husband Bill , is also a pharmacist , as is Nish ’ s sister , Archana .
However , each of Nish and Bill ’ s brothers flicked pharmacy in favour of other occupations - Bill ’ s sibling , Archit , studied economics and Ashnil Singh joined the legal fraternity .
Yes indeed , the children of Naren and Aruna Singh and Chris and Jay Goradi have done their parents proud !
Naren and Arana brought their family to Sydney in 1997 , leaving Suva due the political turmoil in Fiji , first settling in Auckland before setting up home in Hinchinbrook .
“ I did my secondary schooling at the multi-cultural Miller Technology High before heading off to uni and that fateful meeting with Bill ,” Nish said .
Bill was born in Mumbai and came to Australia with his family as a two-year-old in 1986 .
Nish and Bill ’ s friendship during their studies fluctuated between classes , parttime jobs which included 6pm-midnight shifts three days a week at the Blood Bank in Wynyard , and frequent sojourns in the university ’ s Wentworth Building .
Where there was a popular bar and several pool tables !
“ We ’ d have a couple of drinks , play pool and plot our grand designs of going into business together ,” Nish laughed .
After graduation , spending their Registration Year under supervision in pharmacies , and then working in pharmacies , the two young men put their hard-earned savings into buying the Bundanoon Pharmacy in 2009 .
“ The pharmacy had two respected pharmacists who had been working in the business for over 20 years so Bill and I made the wise decision to ask them to stay on and we kept our own day jobs ,” Nish said .
A year later , the dynamic duo had the funds to also purchase the Kurrajong pharmacy .
“ Bill and I love working up here ,” Bill enthused .
“ We have absolutely wonderful clients and staff headed by fellow pharmacist , Nagula Mayooran , and Jenelle Bull in customer service .
That ’ s chemistry ! Nish Singh ( l ) and his great friend Bill Goradi out on the tiles with their wives . The affable pharmacists have been mates since meeting on their first day at university where they commenced their Bachelor of Pharmacy course .
“ All are like family to us !” During their time in Kurrajong , Nish and Bill have provided part-time work for high school students who expressed a desire to go on to university studies .
“ I am extremely proud to say that we have nurtured them on their journeys to achieve their goals ,” Bill said . Have they ever ! Former young staff members have become engineers , speech therapist , physio therapist , zoologist and marketer .
Bill and Hamshi live in Kellyville with their two children , Shayla , 6 , and fouryear-old Sia , while Bill and Twinkle , North Rocks residents , are also proud parents to three youngsters - Prisha , 6 , Tanisha 2 and one-year-old Tavish .
Oh , lucky men ! But always remember that people who work hard always seem to find Lady Luck smiling upon them .

Scientists can induce an ulcerative colitis ( UC ) like condition in rats and pigs by intrarectal administration of acetic acid . The acid damages the colonic epithelial ( lining ) cells . Damaged cells release inflammatory chemicals in order to inform / warn surrounding tissue cells and bring immune cells into the area to investigate and deal with the cause / s of cell damage .
Eventually the death of epithelial cells leads to ulcer formation in the rectum and colon . How acetic acid induces colitis is still unclear , but reactive oxygen species produced by the activated immune system cells plays a significant role .
Glutathione ( GSH ) is a tripeptide , a tiny protein . GSH is made in the liver , which acts as a GSH reservoir . GSH is made from the essential amin acid cysteine . Being ‘ essential ’ means that cysteine , unlike many other amino acids , can ’ t be made by our bodies but must be gotten from the diet . Once made GSH is delivered via the blood stream to all body-cells .
Inside body cells it plays a critical role in protecting them against celldamage from : 1 . immune-system-generated
( microbe killing ) free radicals . 2 . free radicals generated during energy production by mitochondria . 3 . many other toxins made inside body-cells .
4 . toxic agents from external sources such as , pollution related chemicals a . nitric oxide b . sulphur oxide c . cigarette smoke compounds , etc GSH quickly neutralises these toxic agents . The maintenance of excellent GSH levels inside cells is key to overcoming the harmful effects of immune system generated free radicals , which can damage and kill cells such as colonic epithelial cells in UC . So , could cysteine supplementation as N-Acetylcysteine ( NAC ) help treat UC ?
When acetic acid is used to induce ulcerative colitis , giving animals high ( 500mg / kg ) daily oral doses of NAC inhibits : 1 . colonic epithelial cell death 2 . breakdown of normal epithelial layer structure 3 . ulcer formation 4 . formation of : a . free radical producing enzymes ( and by implication damaging free radicals ) b . cell death promoting signals ( Caspase 3 ) and raises the local hormone EGF which promotes colonic-epithelial-cell survival , proliferation , growth , and migration to speed ulcer healing ( Wang et al , 2013 ).
A study in humans , by Guijarro et al , ( 2008 ), showed that giving UC patients NAC ( 800mg / day - a much lower dose than used in the animal study above ), in addition to 2.4 g / day mesalazine ( the standard of care for most UC patients ), improved clinical response rates by 50 %, 44 % of patients responded with clinical improvement with mesalazine-only , while 66 % responded to mesalazine plus NAC .
