Hawkesbury PCYC has a police presence on site – not to keep the peace but to help guide young folk on the right path to success in life .
Senior Constable Brad Martin is the resident officer in charge and is regularly supported by visiting officers , including Senior Constables Paul Sneesby and John Bollard who were on hand when the Independent visited .
Dave introduced me to the officers who were only too happy to provide me with the skills they bring to Hawkesbury PCYC .
The youth engagement officers oversee two programs which are proving to be of great benefit to not only club members but also high school students across the district – FitForLife and the innovative FitForService .
“ FitForLife is conducted each Tuesday morning during school terms from 7am- 8.30am . The kids follow exercises classes which include boxing and circuit training with indoor games such as soccer , dodge ball and basketball ,” Brad explained .
“ We then provide breakfast and a hot drink before putting the participants onto a bus and relaying them to their schools .”
Your writer was particularly taken by the FitForService program .
Brad and Paul visit high schools in the district to liaise with career advisors who put them in touch with pupils who are interested in forging careers in the military or as police , ambulance and fire and rescue officers .
“ We take them on excursions to police and ambulance stations and facilities , military bases and in the near future they ’ ll be visiting a water police base in either Balmain or at Botany Bay ,” Brad said .
After my chat with our three members of the thin blue line , I turned my attention to giving Dave Zammit the third degree . Dave is married to Belinda and the couple have two children , Ricky , eight , and seven-year-old Aleah .
The happy couple , who married in
2012 , met when both worked at an Office Works outlet and attended a company social function .
Where their romance began , as have umpteen others , was on the dance floor !
Dave ’ s parents , George and Mary , each migrated with their parents to Australia when they were in their early teens – the families settling in Wentworthville and Toongabbie .
Like a host of other Maltese immigrants , they and their parents worked hard to give their descendants fulfilling and happy lives in their new country .
Dave and Belinda ensured their three children , Richard , now 48 , 45-year-old Dave and Joanne , 42 , were all well-educated to ensure they could reach their full potentials .
Dave left Grantham High – now Hills Sports High – with his Higher School Certificate which led him to acquiring a Bachelor of Business degree at Southern Cross University ’ s Coffs Harbour campus .
“ I graduated in 1998 and for the next 17 years worked as a store manager in various Coles and Office Works stores before accepting an offer to manage the new Masters Home Improvement store in St Mary ’ s ,” Dave said .
The Masters challenge to Bunnings wasn ’ t a success and after it closed its doors across Australia , Dave successfully applied to manage Parramatta PCYC .
“ When the opportunity came to apply for the manager ’ s job at Hawkesbury PCYC , I was quick off the mark in submitting what turned out to be a successful application ,” Dave said . “ This truly is the best job I ’ ve ever had ! “ It is a wonderful and friendly community and I just love working with our club members and the members of the police force .
“ All of us associated with the club strive to ensure all who come through our doors have a memorable and uplifting experience .”
