Can green space make us less lonely ? Evidence tells us yes …
We see so many stories in the media about the increasing incidence of poor mental health and loneliness amongst our community . One solution rarely discussed is community connection , and the impact of local , quality green spaces .
A recent article published by the University of NSW and the University of Wollongong , “ 1 in 4 Australians is lonely . Quality green spaces in our cities offers a solution ”, suggests that quality green spaces can improve social and community connection , which in turn can improve levels of loneliness , theconversation . com / 1-in-4- australians-is-lonely-quality-green-spacesin-our-cities-offer-a-solution-188007
They note that our urban environment has often been designed with inadequate , quality green space , and that this environmental design can be addressed to make a difference for people in neighbourhoods . They have termed this phenomenon the “ lonelygenic environment ”.
If we think about our neighbourhoods as places where people gather , know each other , talk , help each other , kids play together , these are the interactions that create a sense of belonging and connection to each other . The new urban landscape is rapidly changing with higher density and limited public space for gathering and playing . It can also be devoid of trees that provide shade and may often be clogged with cars . It seems we may be losing our “ people friendly streets and green spaces ”.
During the pandemic , the universities undertook a nationally representative survey and found that people with access to high quality green space had a five-fold increase in their connection with neighbours .
The evidence tells us that quality green spaces foster attachment and belonging , along with the known health benefits of being in nature . These spaces are used for relaxation , playing , creating safety , providing access for

Community gardens can offer additional therapeutic benefits , particularly for those who may be introverted , impacted by trauma or a general sense of “ burn out ” living in these challenging times .
The challenge is to understand what local neighbourhoods need from their streets and green spaces , and design to meet those needs . It is critical to address the barriers for people accessing these public spaces , and ensure we create environments that promote connection for all .
Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre has been supporting this work through various strategies over many years . Our partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens and Trust in our Community Garden is developing into a beautiful , friendly , safe space that people of all ages and ability can participate . Why not come along and join us for some quality time in the garden and meet others in our neighbourhood ?
As our community grows rapidly , with many new “ neighbourhoods ” being built , it is timely to hear the findings of the work undertaken by the University of NSW and University of Wollongong . Now , it ’ s time to hear from you ! Tell us about your local green spaces and what you would like to see happen to promote community connection . You can share your thoughts on a quick survey using the QR code on this page , or by going to www . riverstone . org . au .
We can use your feedback to continue our work with a range of public agencies to advocate for quality open spaces for our neighbourhoods . We want these spaces to become community connection points , where our people create their own new , shared memories . Log on and have your say .
By building community connection we are “ Building a Stronger Community Together !”
