a proud history
Windsor Wolves Team of the Century
by Greg Martin
As did many clubs around Australia , Windsor Rugby League Football Club announced a Team of the Century to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the game in Australia in 1908 .
A four-man selection panel of club diehards , Denny Dunn , Dail Miller , Paul Wayling and Terry Saunders , spent over six weeks sifting through players from several generations in settling on a team .
Unfortunately , players from the pre-World War II period couldn ’ t be evaluated as there was no-one alive to recount their deeds .
At the end of six weekly selection meetings , the four men , after several heated but amiable discussions , announced a starting line-up of 13 players with four reserves . “ You could say it was an interesting six weeks ,” quipped Paul Wayling .
“ It was easy going at the first meeting when we all agreed on five or six players across all 13 positions but then the fun started as we culled players each week to eventually agree on the Wolves Team of the Century .
“ In the end , all four of us were happy with our selections .”
The only criteria for consideration for selection was that a player had to have played at least two seasons with the club in first grade .
Fullback : Chris Walker Prolific goalscorer , elusive and possessed of all the skills . Could have been selected in any position in the backline . Winger : Colin Murphy Australian Schoolboys representative who had speed to burn and great vision . Centre : Vaughan Humphreys Team-mates loved playing outside him because he ensured they had every opportunity in attack . Centre : Terry Glover One of the most elusive footballers to play for the club . Had supporters on their toes whenever he was in possession . Winger : Dan Randall Lightning quick and never botched an opportunity to plant the ball over the tryline . Five-eighth : Ron Phillips Had it all in attack and defence . Possessed great footwork and tackled hard . Halfback : Garry Longhurst Tough as teak with and without the ball . Read play like Captain Cook could read a map . Prop : Tito Nuimata Punishing defender and always ran onto the ball at top speed – giving nightmares to defenders . Hooker : Keith Sunderland Excellent striking for the ball in the scrums , gave good service from dummy half and ran the ball like a raging prop . Prop : Leo Grosso No nonsense player with and without the ball in hand . Gave it all from go to whoa .
Windsor Wolves Team of the Century players and player representatives who were all proud to receive special jerseys to commemorate their selection in the 17-man line-up .
Second-rower : Tony Buckpitt Fans loved watching him grab the ball and charge into the defensive line . Strong defender . Second-rower : Jim Moffitt Powerful in attack and defence and was blessed with the skill to offload to his support runners . Lock : Richie Grech Had all the skills and his scything cover defence was a-la Ron Coote , Johnny Raper and Steve Mortimer . Reserve : Ray Robinson Like Sugar Ray , he was punishing out in the middle , either defending or running the ball . Reserve : Val de Bono No bones about it , Val had superb ball skills and was a powerhouse in defence . Reserve : Craig Trindall Very effective goal-kicker , the elusive halfback ’ s stepping would have done Nureyev proud . Reserve : Tony Saunders Tireless from the opening whistle to the final hooter . A punishing , copy-book tackler and exciting ball-carrier .
