ArtExpress honour

by Maryann Jenkins
Former Colo High school student Bradley Jenkins is among an elite group of NSW HSC graduates to have their major work appearing in ArtExpress 2022 , currently on display at the NSW Art Gallery .
ArtExpress features a selection of outstanding and exemplary student artworks developed for the art-making component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts in 2021 – completed in one of the most challenging years experienced by senior students .
Just 43 students ’ work from across all NSW schools was selected for the exhibition , which is currently in residence at the Art Gallery of NSW until 25 April before it travels to Tweed Regional Gallery . The exhibition will also be launched virtually online in May , giving it a wider audience .
Bradley is the only student in the Hawkesbury to achieve the honour and one of just three students in Sydney ’ s northwest to have been selected - Ruby Ivin ( Hornsby Girls High ) and Matthew Barrett ( Cherrybrook High ) are featured in our Hills Independent edition .
The 18-year-old from Bowen Mountain follows in the footsteps of a raft of successful graduates from the North Richmond school ’ s reputable Visual Art faculty .
His work titled ‘ Tickets Please ’ is in photo-media category , with his use of black and white dark room photography processing and modern printing .
“ I was so surprised , I didn ’ t really expect my work to be selected ,” the self-proclaimed ‘ historical hysterical ’ who scrutinises public transport documents and archives , told the Independent .
“ I expected a reasonable mark but certainly not 50 / 50 which qualifies you for ArtExpress .”
His artists ’ statement explains Bradley combined his research into historical photographic techniques and “ a healthy , yet slightly overzealous , diversion into various modes of transport ” to show the connections between individuals , objects and reminiscences about the history of Sydney transport .
“ A world of record keeping is fast becoming a lost art , but my body of work uses its elements to express the nostalgia

that redefines the historical object , raising it out of mundanity ,” he added .
Head Teacher Visual Arts , Music and Dance at Colo High , Sharron Mountain , said Bradley ’ s work was both brilliant , inspiring and deserving of the exhibition . “ Colo has a tremendous historical success rate in ArtExpress . We ’ ve received the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation prize for Excellence in Teaching for our Visual Art faculty ,” Ms Mountain said , explaining the Year 12s were a ‘ smashing class ’ which worked hard during four months of isolation to produce top quality work well above the state average .
“ In this year ’ s ArtExpress there is less than one-third of students from public schools , I ’ m so proud of the exemplary standard we achieved ,” Ms Mountain explained .
“ Students and our teachers went above and beyond . We were contactless - dropping paintbrushes , card and all sorts of equipment in students ’ letterboxes so they could complete their HSC major works during the lockdowns because they couldn ’ t come to school .
“ We even had to arrange special dropoff points with businesses from Mt Victoria and Faulconbridge to North Richmond so students could get their works finished or framed .”
Bradley said he took more than eight-months to complete the various components of his work , even turning his bathroom into a makeshift darkroom during the school lockouts .
This energetic volunteer with the Sydney Bus Museum Leichhardt , Sydney Tramway Museum Loftus and NSW Rail Museum Thirlmere , continues to follow his passion for recording history by studying for a career in cultural heritage conservation .
