Hawberry Quilter January 2014

Volume 18 Issue 05 January 16, 2014 Island Quilters Guild Hawberryquilting.blogspot.com President’s Message: Mail: c/o Wool ‘n’ Things 2172 Hwy 542, RR3 Tehkummah, ON P0P 2C0 Editor: [email protected] Happy 2014: Hope everyone had a great holiday. Just think – a whole year of quilting stretching before us. Have you got lots of projects in mind or are you open to prompting from magazines, books, block of the month etc? I started a single bed quilt for a great-niece, want to make a quilt for our grandson, do the Trend-Tex challenge and keep up with the guild block of the month. Oh yes, I brought home a charity quilt package in December and haven't opened it yet. So much to do and so little time. 2014 will be the year of our quilt show – looking forward to that. Of course, I am planning on taking in part of the CQA conference in June in St. Catharines. That is our old stomping grounds so will be going home [well, no – the Island is home now]. Hopefully, you have lots to anticipate in the new year. We have one member who is really anticipating the spring and a new baby. We are so happy for you, Melissa and Caleb. Forty-two of us enjoyed a lovely meal at the Missionary Church for our December meeting. Thanks to the congregation there for providing the meal with all the extra touches. Also, thanks to Barb Bright for doing the arranging. Thanks to all who brought gifts for CAS kids. The Christmas tree was quite loaded down. Coupon Capers were fun as usual with some winning multiple items -- and then some of us coming up dry. It was all for a good cause with $485 realized and rounded up to a $500 check presented to the Manitoulin Family Resources. We had our first executive meeting of the year on the 7th and although the weather was somewhat iffy, nine made it to my house. It was a good meeting [see minutes elsewhere]. After everyone left and I was putting chairs away etc. I thought to myself “what a great group of women to work with”. Then I thought about quilters in general and decided quilting must be an activity that attracts great people as generally quilters are kind, caring people. There was a house fire in Burpee Mills Twp. last weekend. Kathy Grant brought a charity quilt to the meeting and Barb Bright carried it on and presented it to Julia Winder, who had lived in the house. My family had some connections to that house years ago - so sad to see it gone. Looking forward to connecting with many of you at our monthly meetings. Regards to members who are elsewhere for the winter. Support a Scent Aware Environment To protect the health and well being of our members and visitors, the Island Quilt Guild kindly requests that you do not wear or use scented products while at an executive or general membership meeting. Scented products linger long after an individual leaves an area. This can cause allergies and respiratory difficulties for some people. Your co-operation in making the Island Quilt Guild a scent free meeting place is urged and we believe that a little consideration will go a long way.
