Q: What are some good tips that you can give to any new or first time haunted attractions that may be starting in 2014 or beyond?

A: I would tell new haunters to make sure your local government is OK with your venture. You will need to get permission in writing and follow all local, state and federal codes as they pertain to haunted attractions. If you are opening an attraction in Pennsylvania, you will need to attend the PA department of Agriculture safety seminars and inspectors course.

Q: What awards have you received in your years of service to the haunted attraction industry?

A: We received the director’s award from the International Association of Haunted Attractions in 1999, and have been on top 10 Lists for well over a decade. The one that really tickles me was a European news website that rated the Bates Motel as the scariest Halloween Tourist Attraction in the world! They were never here so I don’t know how they came up with it.

Q: How many people do you have in attendance each year at the Bates Motel and Pennhurst Asylum?

A: Depending on the weather we usually have between 40 and 60 thousand customers
