Within the fashion industry there are many different types of retailers. They each appeal to
different markets and each differ to each-other.
A multiple retailer is a large, well know retailer which usually consist of 10 or more stores.
An example of this type of store would be Topshop.
A Department store is a large store which sells a range of products. They are often large and
more luxurious then other stores. An example of a department store would be John Lewis or
House of Fraser.
A specialist store is a type of store that focuses on one thing. They sell one type of product
and are known for selling it. Examples of this would be Agent Provocateur. They sell luxury
lingerie. Another example is ‘The sunglasses hut’, they are known and specialise in selling
sunglasses.
Another Retailer is an Online Retailer. These retailers are based online and have no stores
anywhere. Two examples of this type of retailer would be Net-a-Porter and Asos.
A independent retailer is a retailer where an individual person runs and owns the business
compared to being owned by a corporation. Examples of this include Superdry and
Mulberry.
Supermarkets are Retailers which sell groceries and sometimes expand to other products
such as technology and clothing depending on the size of the store. Examples of
supermarkets would be Sainsburys and Tescos.
A non-profit retailer is one which we would usually call a ‘Charity shops’. These retailers rely
on donations being made to run their shop and then give away all profits to charity.
Examples of this would be the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK.
Another type of retailer is a Public Place Retailer. These are retailers who are in places like
Airports and Train stations. They would usually be offering services such as coffee shops or
places to grab food quickly. In a airport it would be common to see places to buy toiletries
and get food. Examples of these would be Costa and Boots.
