ETI Base Code and the 9 key points. The ETI base code is the The Ethical Trading Initiative. It is a code of labour practice that is used by many large companies and suppliers around the world. The 9 points cover many workers rights. The 9 points are as followed: 1. Employment is freely chosen - This means all work is chosen to be done and there is no involuntary prison labour 2. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected - Workers have the right to join a trade union and practise in a trade union if they wish. 3. Working conditions are safe and hygienic - At all times safe and hygienic working conditions must be available. Health and safety training must be provided to all workers. 4. Child labour shall not be used - No recruitment of child labour should be permitted. Children and young people, 18 and under must also not be employed at night or in dangerous conditions. 5. Living wages are paid - All wages paid must meet the minimum age. 6. Working hours are not excessive - All working hours must comply within the laws. All overtime given must be voluntary. 7. No discrimination is practiced -No discrimination at all when hiring, compensation, access to training, promotion, termination or retirement based on race, caste, national origin, religion, age, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, union membership or political affiliation 8. Regular employment is provided - To every extent possible work performed must be on the basis of recognised employment. 9. No harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed - No form of abuse is tolerated. An example of a company who is using the ETI base code would be Primark. Primark follow all the 9 steps.
