Fire Prevention Tips
o Never use petrol or lighter fluid to clean clothing, use non-flammable cleaning
fluids. Remember to turn off and unplug the iron if you leave the room or
whel1 you are finished.
o Be careful with aerosole and spray cans. Most aerosoles contain flammable
liquid and they should never be directed near a naked flame or heat source.
o Do not leave aerosole cans near heaters or in the direct sun light and never
bum or puncture them when they are empty.
o
If there is a power failure, make sure all irons, kettles, heaters, are turned off
and unplugged. They could come on again when you are not at home and
start a fire.
o Do not plug any appliance into a light fitting.
o Keep matches safely out of the reach of children.
o Make sure all cookers are switched off when not in use.
o Never leave children alone when a cooker is in use.
o If you have to leave a chip pan TURN OFF THE HEAT.
o If a chip pan catches fire do not move it, turn off the heat if possible. Moving
the chip pan could spread the fire. DO NOT THROW WATER ON IT.
o If the burner of a gas cooker does not light at once, turn it off and check that
the pilot light is on. If the cooker does not have a pilot light, always be ready
to light the burner before you turn on the gas. Finally, always make sure that
a gas ring is turned off after use.
o Never leave an ashtray where it can fall of and do not leave lighted cigarettes
burning in an ashtray.
o Do not throw cigarettes or hot pipe ash into waste paper baskets.
o Before going to bed, make sure that the cooker is turned off.
o Finish your last cigarette and/or pipe and make sure it is put out properly.
Check the ashtray for burning cigarettes or pipes. Make sure the contents are
cold before throwing them away.
o Switch off the television and other appliances and pullout the plugs.
o Check the children's room to make sure all appliances are switched off there
too.
