Citizen Maths

Short description
Citizen Maths is for people who want to improve their grasp of maths, and become more
confident in using maths at work and in life. Problems like using spreadsheets, judging
amounts or assessing odds.
The course is at 'Level 2' — the level that a 16-year-old school leaver is expected to achieve
in maths. The course is based on solving the kinds of problems that come up at work and in
life. And it is free. Citizen Maths is a free online course. It helps one learn maths in a new
way. Instead of abstract routines, the course uses practical problems to help one grasp some
“powerful ideas” in maths. Participants can then apply these in work and in life. The course
covers five such ideas: Proportion, Uncertainty, Representation, Pattern and Measurement.
Each takes between five and 10 hours to complete.
Target group
Adults with poor numeracy skills
Products / Outcomes
The products of the course include 18 units aimed at developing numeracy skills needed for
real life situations. The aim is to give thousands of learners the feeling that they are in a one-
to-one tutorial. So Citizen Maths is made of very short instructional videos by our two “to-
camera” tutors, who are very experienced maths teachers. However, Citizen Maths has
features not in the AI MOOC. For example:
• provide purpose-made app-based activities to help learners build up their mathematical
understanding, including a small amount of programming, using Scratch;
• provide automated learner support and adaptive encouragement to help learners stay
motivated to progress with the course.
Transferability
Citizen Maths is developed in English. The content may be translated to other languages with
the help of automatic Google translation.
